Tankless Water Heater Guides

What is the tankless water heater?

Nowadays tankless water heater has become a significant choice for the most of the residents as it helps saving money on electricity bills. At the same time, it is reasonably priced. So people can afford it easily. The Best Tankless Water Heaters provide hot water for heating water instantly without reserving it in a tank. A gas burner is used for heating the cold water while pressing the tap to turn on. It is capable of giving a continuous supply of hot water. Usually, a tankless water heater delivers 2 to 5 gallons hot water in a minute. Interestingly, you will not require a separate reserving tank to store enough hot water for use.

Tankless Water Heater Guides

There are two types of tankless water heater:

1) Gas-fired heater

2) Electric heater

Condensing vs Non-Condensing Tankless Water Heaters:

In terms of condensation water, two types of water heaters are there. One is condensing tankless water heater and another one is non-condensing tankless water heaters. Each of them has some distinct features that are discussed here:

Condensing Tankless Water Heaters:

The drained gases emit extra heat. This additional heat is pulled out by the condensing tankless water heater in many ways and hence consumers cooler gases in 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The condensation is produced by the cooling of drained gases inside the unit. An inexpensive venting material is used for the cooler exhaust gases. Normally standard PVC schedule is utilized because it endures heat and the corrosiveness of the gases. A condensing unit can obtain a higher efficiency like 90% to 98%. Because unconsumed heat is used here to heat the water. Sometimes the real life efficiency is slightly lower than the claimed efficiency. For condensing tankless water heater, the heat exchanger is the most important part. It should be made of special stainless steel alloy to be non-corrosive. Before draining the condensation water outside it is neutralized by special purification or refining.

Non-Condensing Tankless Water Heaters:

Hot gases will be pushed through the vent to the outside by the non-condensing tankless water heaters which will cool down there. Temperatures of that gases will be almost 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The venting materials used in non- condensing tankless water heaters are expensive as they need to be non-corrosive and heat tolerant. In these type of tankless water heaters, efficiency is around 83% as the heat energy contained in the hot drained gases will not be used to heat the water. These will be wasted by draining them. The energy used to heat the water is inversely proportional to the hotness of the drained gases. That’s why the efficiency is low.

Between these two types of tankless water heaters, sometimes people get confused about which one to buy. Price for each type may not vary that much. Considering the efficiency you may decide which one to use or buy. If you want higher efficiency then you must go for condensing tankless water heater over the non-condensing one.

Tankless Water Heater Problems and Troubleshoot:

The regular users of tankless water heater face some random problems which can be solved by taking some initiative. Here we described some common problems related to the tankless water heater and its troubleshooting:

Problem:

  • No ignition of the burner.

Troubleshoot:

  • Provide enough gas pressure to your tankless water heater.
  • Make sure that the unit is properly grounded to avoid problems. The fuses on the control unit should be checked.
  • Wiring harness and igniter should be checked for the write operation and verify that the electrode produces a flame. Electrical short of the component needs to be checked.
  • The gas valve should be checked if it can be opened or not.
  • Check the burner’s placement in the combustion chamber.
  • Examine if there is any moisture or rubbish on the burner that can produce the gas burning problem. The flow sensor’s activity should be checked.
  • The burner will not ignite if the flow is lower. It is one of the common problems which can be fixed easily.
  • Check the lines installment for correct cold and hot water installation.
  • Sediment can be found in the faucet aerators or shower head. It creates problems for the tankless unit.
  • For wrong washer at a single lever faucet, you need to check for crossover in plumbing.

Problem:

  • Fault in the heat exchanger or overheating problem.

Troubleshoot:

Now check if there are any of these following traits in the heat exchanger and troubleshoot for them:

  • The presence of exotic materials in the heat exchanger.
  • Blocked heat exchanger.
  • Short flow inside the heat exchanger.
  • The sensor is filthy.
  • The incorrect gas type used.

Problem:

  • Temperature fluctuation of water.

Troubleshoot:

  • At first, check if there is any restriction in the flow.
  • The filter should be cleaned if it is filthy.
  • Plumbing crossover should be checked.
  • Now, the water pressure should be checked if it fluctuates or not.

Problem:

  • Extremely hot water.

Troubleshoot:

  • If the selected temperature is very high then choose the lower temperature.
  • Check if there is any path obstruction in the shower head.
  • The inlet filter should be cleaned.
  • Make sure that the temperature sensors are tightly mounted.

Problem:

  • Water is not perfectly hot.

Troubleshoot:

  • If the selected temperature is very low then choose the higher temperature.
  • You have to increase the flow to fulfill the minimum pressure.
  • Provide sufficient gas pressure and line according to different models.
  • Make sure that the temperature sensors are tightly mounted.
  • Plumbing crossover should be checked.

If you want to maintain your water heater properly and reduce your hassle then you need to start a regular inspection annually. You can give it a time to time proper servicing every second month also to keep your tankless water heater performing well.

Why Are Top Tankless Water Heaters Gaining Popularity?

For many reasons, tankless water heaters are gaining popularity. It has a lot of advantages that are grabbed by the modern people. Some of them are discussed below:

  • It is easier to install as it takes minimum space whereas the conventional water heaters with tank require huge space to be installed. The tankless water heaters are commonly 20 inches to 28 inches in height. It has no extra storage tank and so it can be placed in the small portion of the area. But the heaters with a tank have at least 60 inches height which has to be installed in a bigger space.
  • The price of the traditional water heaters may be lower than the tankless water heaters. But the tankless heaters are used for a short and limited period of time as people use it on demand. So the energy is saved more in the case of tankless water heaters. On the other hand, general water heaters require a high amount of electricity to run. For this reason, many people prefer tankless water heaters over the general one and lessen their electricity bill.
